Course Records Blown Away at Elementary CC Races

FORT DEFIANCE— Despite strong, gusty winds accompanying the first cold spell of the fall, three race records fell Saturday afternoon at the eighth-annual Elementary Cross Country Run 4 Fun.  A total of 72 elementary-aged athletes from 15 different area schools competed in three races over the grounds of Clymore Elementary and Stewart Middle School.

Brian Zentz of Lexington’s Waddell Elementary ran the fastest one-mile time ever recorded at the event, finishing in 6:15 to win the fourth-grade boys’ title.  His time was six seconds better than Wilson Elementary’s Mark Phillips, the fifth-grade champion in 2007 in 6:21, and took a whopping 27 seconds off the previous fourth-grade boys’ mark of 6:42.  Zentz’s victory was not only his fourth consecutive Run 4 Fun win, but he also has now established record times for the first through fourth grade races.

Marina Dean, a homeschooled runner also from the Lexington area, became only the second girl under the 7:00 mark for the mile when she broke the girls’ course record set by fifth-grader Faith Farley of North River in 2010.  Dean’s winning time of 6:51 in the fourth grade girls’ race was not only seven seconds under Farley’s all-time mark of 6:58, but was also 25 seconds under the previous fourth-grade girls’ record of 7:16.  The victory was Dean’s second consecutive at the Run 4 Fun.  Her record-setting finish obscured the otherwise outstanding performances of Kelsey Back of Riverheads Elementary, and her sister Aubrie Dean, who finished second and third respectively in a photo finish at 7:11 which put both five seconds under the old grade-level record as well.
